I’ve Seen London, I’ve Seen France, I’ve Seen…

We just got back last night around 9:30pm after spending nearly 24 hours in traveling from our hotel in Aachen, Germany. After getting some decent sleep, I thought I would post a journal of what we did.

Part One: Departure

Once we all arrived at Lambert, we proceed toward the ticket gate and got checked in & cleared security. We then caught our first flight to Chicago, Illinois. We had to wait in Chicago for four hours. We ended up walking around the terminal looking for place to eat at and to get last minutes snacks. Once we took off we had a 7 &1/2 hour flight to Paris, France. While on the flight we had dinner & breakfast. We also got to watch several movies and had time to meet the other people who were traveling from St. Peters in Kirkwood & Ascension in Chesterfield. Our plane arrived in Paris on Sunday morning.

Part Two: Paris, France

We arrive in Paris, France on Sunday (8/14/05). While in Paris we stayed at Campanile Bagnolet Hotel. A group of us went to the McDonalds near the hotel (I had a Royale with Cheese) On Sunday, night we visited Notre Dame Catherdal & did some street shopping. We also ran across a group of pilgrims from California outside of Notre Dame Catherdal. After that we returned to the hotel for dinner & concluded the day with Mass. On Monday after having breakfast & Mass at the hotel we spent the entire day touring Paris. While touring we visited the Eiffel Tower, Louvre & small town on a hill (that I can’t recall the name of). We left the hotel following breakfast on Tuesday morning and traveled onward to Brussels, Belgium.

Part Three: Brussels, Belgium

We arrive in Brussels, Belgium on Tuesday (08/16/05). While in Brussels we had Mass in the center of town in a park(ing) lot. (a.k.a. the Catherdal of the Pigeons). After Mass, traveled the streets of Brussels with our tour guides. We spent the evening eating & shopping. I think almost everyone visited the waffle place and had a delicious belgium waffle & ended buying something having to do with the famous statue Manneken Pis or buying some chocolate. We conclude the night at our hotel Ibis Cenre Gare di Midi. The next day we visited the Breendonk Concentration Camp as we traveled to Germany.

Part Four: Aachen, Germany/Düsseldorf, Germany/Köln, Germany

We arrived at out final hotel Doriant Novotel in Aachen, Germany on Wednesday (8/17/05). On our first night in Aachen we visited the church that Charlamane established. We spent the evening having a real German meal (bratwurst & chips).

On Thursday we spent the day in Köln. We got registered for WYD, and got our official WYD bags. We then had Mass in a church right outside of a WYD registration office. Afterwards got onto the train and made our way to Köln. While in Köln we got to see the Pope travel on the Rhine River. An interesting demonstration (ask F.J.). A group of us then had dinner at a steak place, prior to returning to the hotel for the night.

We’re heading home!

After just over a week of walking all over Europe, we are heading home–at the ungodly hour of 2:45 a.m. German time–tired but happy. I’d meant to write more, but between the details of the trip and the kids immense needs to email their friends, time has been scarce. Estimates are for a million people at the final mass with the Pope, and I’d say that all of them were in our section trying to get home on the same shuttle that we were. There was much pushing and shoving–and that was just the priests behind us. The teens did great though and between their responsibility and a lot of European cell phone minutes, all of us got back to the hotel. We had a good final dinner together and sent off the first bus to Frankfurt, part of our 3-leg journey home. The Mass with the Pope and so many people was unbelievable in its size, although being so far from the action makes it pretty hard to concentrate. So, too, did the fact that the organizers ran out of food and it was in the 40’s the night before. We’ll we’re off now, see you in St. Louis. As much as we’ve loved Europe, everyone is very ready to go home. Thanks for your prayers. See you in a few hours.

Peace,

Fr. Jeff

Our Last Night In Europe

This week has gone by so fast, I can’t believe that we have to be on our plane in just hours. I will be giving a more detailed blog, on either late Monday night or Tuesday.
