Sundays are right again

It’s less than 48 hours until I’m home for the summer and I can hardly contain my excitement!  As much as I will miss my friends, my apartment, even my job and classes up here at Dayton, I am ready for a break.  Like any college student, I’m ready to see my family and friends from back home – and the no homework thing is a big plus, but one of the things I am most excited to come back to is noon Mass at Cletus.

If you grew up in the parish and went to noon Mass every Sunday, if may be hard to see just how great it is.  But if you have spent any time away from noon Mass (say you go off to college), you will begin to see just how special it really is and you will understand why I can’t wait to come back.

I can’t wait to come back to a place where you are instantly surrounded by people who care about you.  Where happiness and God’s love are almost tangible in the air.  Where you can sing your heart out, praising God, regardless of just how horrible your voice is.  Where you are loved just the way you are, with no one wanting you to change.

That is why I am excited to come home – Sundays will be right again.

**A quick note to any teen that will be going off to college in the fall:  Enjoy your time at noon Mass this summer and try not to take it for granted because it really is special.  And don’t worry – if you do find your self missing it when you are away, know that it will always be here when you come back on breaks, and it will be better than you could have ever imagined.

Missing out

I spent last weekend in Joplin, Missouri, visiting my good friend Chris. It is always good to see him, because we get along so well. He’s one of those friends where it doesn’t matter what we’re doing, he always makes me feel comfortable. It was a great time.

As I was driving down there, though, I passed Springfield, where I spent 5 years of my life in what I like to call my “college years.” (: As I passed the two main exits and noticed all the things that were familiar about them and all the things that had changed since I’d seen them last, my mind began to wander. It wandered back to other things about Springfield that I remember.

It’s pretty typical for me, when thinking about this period of my life, to come to rest on a particular thought, and not one that I particularly care for.

Kara and Natalie were the popular ones. They were the ones seen at all the parties or gatherings, and involved in everything…but the kind of people that everyone likes. They were the kind of “cool” kids that treat everyone the same, no matter who you are, what you believe in, or who you hang out with. I couldn’t understand, however, why they liked me. I didn’t get, at all, why they would want to hang out with me, or include me in their plans.

I’m not sure if it was a feeling of unworthiness, or just a feeling that I’m so different from them, or what, but I recognize it now as a time when I failed to receive God’s love. I rejected that love because of my insecurities and uncomfortableness. How many times have I rejected His love for me because of my own human faults? How many times have YOU?
